Launching Your Own Teaching Business: First Steps

A MIDTESOL Conference Presentation Recap

This past weekend I presented at the MIDTESOL Conference—the regional affiliate of the TESOL International Association for Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska.

My topic was Launching Your Own Teaching Business. I talked about some of the things you need to consider when deciding whether starting your own business is a good fit for you, and how to move from just an idea to actually getting started!

I was delighted to see how many teachers right here in the Midwest are thinking about starting their own teaching business! The 8 steps I covered in this session were:

  1. Consider whether a teaching business is a good fit

  2. Choose your niche

  3. Decide on your delivery method

  4. Find your community

  5. Assemble your tools

  6. Put yourself out there

  7. Think like a business

  8. Try stuff!

I created this Resource Packet as a way to reflect on the ideas I covered in the presentation, and it includes a worksheet with questions that will help you process your thoughts and ideas.

It also includes a detailed list of recommended resources including books, podcast episodes, and coaches and teacher entrepreneurs you can follow and learn from.

If you have ever considered starting your own teaching business, I hope this is a helpful resource as you reflect on your next steps. I am always happy to serve as a mentor or sounding board, and I would love to stay in touch as you think about your own ideas and plans, no matter how small they may be at the moment.
